Debbie Smith
As the chairwoman of the Assembly Ways & Means committee during possibly the worst fiscal crisis our state has ever seen, you could excuse Assemblywoman Debbie Smith if she was too busy to focus on issues important to Nevada conservationists. Instead, she was key in keeping our state parks open and providing some funding to the conservation districts, as well as sponsoring a bill to solidify the conservation position on the State Wildlife Commission.
This bill guided Governor Sandoval’s most recent appointments to the commission, which will result in a focus on sound scientific management of our wildlife resources. Assemblywoman Smith also led the fight within Assembly leadership against SB 271, and although her efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, we know we can rely on her next session to try to reverse this misguided legislation. Over her long career in public office, she has been a key legislator fighiting for the protection of Nevada’s land, water and wildlife. We are proud to call her our Assemblywoman of the Year.
